Applying Visual Basic for Human Machine Interface Applications

Object based technologies and the Visual Basic programming language have gained widespread acceptance in the general marketplace with over 3,000,000 users worldwide. This paper will explore the technical issues that must be addressed in providing information delivery from plant floor devices to the enterprise in human machine interface applications utilizing Visual Basic technologies. Issues to be addressed will include PLC and control system connectivity, database connectivity, recipe download, logging, trending, and alarming. The paper will explore how off-the-shelf technologies based on specifications such as COM, ActiveX and OPC can be used with applications developed in Visual Basic to address these issues and provide flexible, cost-effective information delivery systems.
